AI Syllabus Statement

All instructors must adopt an AI policy for their course and state it explicitly in their syllabus. 

The statement should include the following: 

• When the use of AI is permitted with attribution. 

• When the use of AI is not permitted. 

• What are the consequences for misusing AI (refer to academic integrity policy). 

• Which AI tools are permitted or not permitted. 

• What counts as AI use in their course, including applications like grammar checkers, spellcheck, web search, and editing aids. 

Note: Instructors may adopt these examples or adjust their syllabus statement to their own class and content area. Your syllabus statement will fall under one of these three categories:

Category 1: AI Integration Allowed – AI tools can be used broadly with ethical guidelines and proper citation. AI tools are allowed and/or required for specific assignments or tasks. Syllabus Statement Example: AI tools, including generative AI, may be used in this class, and may be required for specific assignments. All AI tools should be used within ethical guidelines and with proper attribution. Failure to follow ethical guidelines may constitute an academic integrity violation under university rules.

Category 2: Limited AI Use Permitted – AI tools are allowed and/or required for specific assignments or tasks, as designated by the instructor, with proper citation. Syllabus Statement Example: AI tools are allowed and/or required for specific assignments and tasks in this course, as designated by the instructor and with appropriate citation. The content you submit is your responsibility. AI-generated content can be inaccurate, offensive, or biased. Your work must demonstrate your knowledge and avoid these pitfalls.

Category 3: AI Usage Prohibited – AI Tools are not allowed for any assignments. Syllabus Statement Example: Unless students are explicitly told otherwise by the instructor, AI tools are not allowed for any assignments in this class. Maintain evidence of your work (drafts, notes, sources) to demonstrate originality. Violations of this policy will constitute an academic integrity violation under university rules.
